South's first vineyard deserves a toast | Bangkok Post: news

(Photo by Methee Muangkaew)TRANG -- A local farmer has transformed part of his rubber plantation into an organic vineyard -- a first in Thailand's South -- and his success is encouraging others to follow suit. Mr Kayachart planted five strains of grapevines in greenhouses, and soon harvested a 60kg yield that sold for up to 250 baht per kilogramme. With spirits raised by the quick results, his family is now expanding the vineyard to cover one rai of farmland, and hopes to harvest a tonne of grapes. Other farmers have placed more orders for cuttings than Mr Suthin can fill -- seeing the economic potential of turning rubber into wine.
